Egg Carton Garden

On our continuing journey with our indoor garden we used an egg carton to plant some seeds

A good way to use your finished egg cartons and I have even seen people use egg shells (that they painted)  which is a cool idea too, but we just used the egg carton.

As usual we added some sensory fun to it by letting the boys put their hands in the dirt, play in it, describe how it felt, and just let them enjoy it for a bit.

After we planted our seeds in the egg carton, we put them in a safe area, from the two year old lol and where they could get light and air.

Planting Flowers in Homeschool

Alhamdulilah spring is in the air, and we are teaching the children about flowers. What makes flowers grow, and what is needed.

The children were excited because we went a different route, we paper mache dish detergent bottles and made them into planting pots for our indoor garden.

We cut the dish detergent bottle in half…added holes at the bottom and the children paper mache them, then painted them. The next day we planted our flowers in them.

It was pretty fun to do.

The children planted wild flowers, basil, radishes, and dill.

Not in the same containers though :) this was just one set that we finished.  What you can discuss with your children about this is the fact that Allah created everything and He is known as Al Khaliq- The Creator… this is a good way to teach the children one of the names of Allah and also explaining that it is Allah Who provides us with the herbs that we grow..to feed us and the flowers and trees.

Allah’s creation is so beautiful and we should take care of it, by never throwing trash on the ground, recycling, and doing our part no matter how big or small to take care of what Allah has given us :)

The Week Of Worms..So Far

The first two days or worms we worked on our worm word wall and learned some really great facts about the worm

We learn about how many hearts a worm has and how they have no teeth

The second day we are working on the anatomy of a worm, and more facts. We are introducing new vocabulary words from the word wall in all the lessons this week. Here are our two projects so far!

Our words come from the Dolch list for preschool and first grade.

Then we made cereal worms to begin our intro the anatomy of a worm

We simply allowed  the children to glue the cereal on the paper and make a cereal tree

InshaAllah later we will go on a worm hunt!

Jellyfish in A Bottle

Today part of our learning about the ocean we saw this great idea about Jellyfish in a bottle. A great idea from:

Bhoom Play  http://bhoomplay.wordpress.com/2011/09/09/diy_jellyfish_eng/

I must admit for a simple easy to do project the first time our jellyfish seemed to float at the top kind of limp!

The materials you need for this are: clear bag, food coloring, and a piece of thread.

We cut the handles off the plastic bag, then cut the sides of the bag and disregarded one side.

After we grabbed it from the center and tied the thread like it was a little balloon but not too tight because after it is tide and you cut the tentacles ..you have to place some water in the bag (the head) of the jellyfish.

It was kind of hard  to take a picture of it in the water so we made a video of it.

This was a fun to do project with the kiddos. We will continue to explore ocean life this week inshaAllah

Leaf Wreath

We made this leaf wreath in the fall. We spoke about why leaves change colors in the fall and how they look.

We learn that “Trees respond to the decreasing amount of sunlight by producing less and less chlorophyll.”

So in the winter time the leaves have less chlorophyll ..that chlorophyll gives the leaves that vibrant green look. Less sunlight in the winter less green :) those brown and red colors were in the leaves already but hidden due to the chlorophyll and can began to show much more in the winter.

Now that it is summer time we will make another leaf wreath with bright colors and flowers. We will have pictures for that soon, its fun because we walk around the neighborhood and gather flowers, talk about the colors and even smell and bring them home for this easy to do project.  It teaches about weather, science, colors and nature.
